Focusing on skiing, climbing and alpine adventures
There are very few things that can beat the feeling of skiing an untouched mountain face, the view from a majestic peak or mastering a new climbing route. If you choose topptur klatring at Høgtun, you get a year filled with exactly those things – and much more – with people that love to do the same!
This is a class for everyone that wants to focus on climbing, skiing and scaling mountain tops in spectacular environments. In the course of the year we are also going to go climbing in El Chorro, Spain – a world-famous climbing destination!
Develop your skills in fantastic surroundings
Høgtun has a fantastic location amidst majestic mountains and world-class peaks. Here you can find some of Norway's best skiing areas and lots of exciting cliffs ready to be climbed. We are exploring Norway from the fjords to the mountains in Trollheimen and Innerdalen, the Sunndal alps and Romsdal mountains.
You do not need to be an expert in climbing or skiing to have fun in this class; irrespective of your level you will experience both achievements and good challenges. We actively work to get better at both climbing and free-skiing in the course of the year.
With the class we will focus on different aspects of being in the outdoors, of skiing and climbing and you will learn a lot about planning trips as well as being outside all year round.
You will get to experience these main activities:
Sports-climbing and cliff-climbing
Alpine skiing/ Telemark skiing class
Ski touring and free-skiing
Skiing in the ski resorts of Stranda, Oppdal and Bjorli
Avalanche safety course
Reading maps and terrain
Class trip to El Chorro
In addition you will get to try:
Introduction to trad climbing
Compass and orientation class
tent trips in both winter and summer
...and much more. There is a lot to look forward to!
Your main class at Høgtun will be taught three days of the week. In addition you will attend the "Learning Norwegian" class.
Mountaineering and ski touring
The school's surroundings offer majestic mountains that you can both ski and hike on. Innerdalen, the Sunndal alps, the Romsdal mountains and the Sunnmørs alps will be our playground. In autumn you will get to experience amazing hikes and we will try mountaineering and trad climbing. In winter and spring we shift our focus to skiing in both the mountains and ski resorts.
You will get instructions in free-skiing, alpine or telemark, on your level. We focus on skiing safely and have avalanche safety classes. We also learn more about planning safe trips, group dynamics, orientation and assessing different types of terrain. Together we will hunt good and safe snow and look for exciting trips in fantastic surroundings.
Class trip: Climbing in El Chorro
In November we extend the outdoor climbing season by travelling to El Chorro in Spain – a world-famous climbing destination. Here we will find excellent limestone, thousands of climbing routes and cliffs as far as the eye can see. El Chorro is the perfect place to further develop your climbing and to fine tune your technique. In addition to its spectacular climbing routes, El Chorro also offers fantastic nature – and we are going to live in a cozy climbing lodge in the midst of those amazing surroundings. We will spend the days climbing in different crags and swimming, in the evenings we will share our climbing adventures with each other and eat good food. In between the climbing days we will also take a rest day or two where we can explore some mountains or the city.
If the Coronavirus situation makes traveling abroad difficult or not tempting we will make an alternative plan in Norway. If so - the cost of this course will be significantly less than announced below.
Skiing week in Oppdal
In February the whole school will travel to the Oppdal ski resort. We are going to live in cabins at IMI-Stølen which has a lot of good facilities and cosy rooms!
Here we will have a good time skiing and relaxing in the cabins afterwards. A lot of proficient instructors will accompany us and you will receive lessons to suit your skiing level. We offer classes in alpine and telemark skiing as well as snowboarding and cross country skiing.
The school offers some good sports facilities and has a lot of equipment for lots of activities. Nonetheless you need some personal equipment like hiking boots, skis, a sleeping bag, a backpack, ski touring equipment, clothing, etc. See the full equipment list for topptur klatring: http://www.hogtun.no/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/gear-list-alpine-adventure.pdf
The teacher: Ingrid Innerdalen
Ingrid has studied at HiST and NTNU and has studied and volunteered in both Ecuador and the Dominican Republic. She grew up in Sunndal very close to Høgtun and knows therefore a lot about the mountains around the school. Ingrid has a lot of experience in climbing and mountaineering. She is a real “mountain goat” and loves to be in the mountains in both summer and winter. Skiing and climbing are her favourite activities and she loves to share such adventures with her class.
29000 NOK for everything including the class trip to El Chorro.
If by any chance the coronavirus situation make us have an alternative plan inside Norway - the cost of this course will be significantly less.

Friluftsliv at Høgtun
There are a lot of folk high schools that offer friluftsliv classes all around Norway, so why should you choose one at Høgtun?
In addition to our fantastic teachers and staff, we might have the best location for friluftsliv in the country. Høgtun is on the northwest side of Norway with amazing nature for sports and friluftsliv. A lot of the mountains around our school are at 1500 -1900 meters above sea level and are perfect for hikes with or without skis. On skiing trips you can easily get to ski down 1600 meters.
Høgtun is located by the sea and there are great water sports and windsurfing opportunities right by the school. Boats and kayaks are free to rent for our students at all times. Hoddevika and Stad are also very close by, these places are great for surfing as well. Additionally, it is not far to drive to ski resorts such as Oppdal with Norway's biggest ski area, Bjorli with Norway's longest skiing season, Tusten ski resort in Molde and Stranda ski resort with amazing off-piste skiing.
